What are chenille stems?

Chenille stems (телени пръчки — teleni prachki, literally "wire sticks") — widely known as pipe cleaners — are flexible craft wire stems covered in soft chenille fibre: a thin wire core twisted with fine chenille (velvet-pile) fibres along its entire length, producing a flexible, bendable stick that holds the shape it is bent into and has a soft, fuzzy texture on the surface. The two essential properties of chenille stems are their flexibility (the wire core bends easily by hand and holds the bent shape without springing back) and their self-adhesion (when two chenille stems are twisted together, the fuzzy fibres interlock and hold without any additional fixing — no glue, no tape needed). Chenille stems are available in standard craft lengths (typically 30cm) in a very wide colour range — solid colours, striped, metallic/glitter varieties, and natural brown/green for botanical applications. The standard diameter is approximately 6mm of chenille fibre around the wire core, though thinner (3mm) and thicker (9mm+) varieties also exist for specific applications. The term "pipe cleaner" comes from their original industrial use for cleaning tobacco pipes — the chenille surface was designed to grip and remove residue from narrow tube interiors — but in craft use the same properties (flexible, soft, self-gripping) make them universally useful for hand-bending into any form.

How are chenille stems used in craft?

Chenille stems are one of the most versatile and widely used materials in children's craft and floral craft. In children's and school craft, chenille stems are used to make simple figures, animals, letters, and decorative shapes by bending and twisting — the soft texture is safe for children's hands, and the self-gripping fibres allow pieces to be connected without tools or adhesive. In artificial flower making, green chenille stems serve as flower stems and leaf wires in fabric, paper, and foam flower arrangements — they provide a flexible stem that can be bent to any angle and holds the flower head in the desired position. In wire sculpture and model making, chenille stems are used to build armatures for small figures and models — twisted together for structural strength, bent to position, and used as the internal skeleton of soft-bodied characters. In seasonal and occasion craft — Easter, Christmas, Halloween — chenille stems are bent into themed decorative shapes: Easter bunny ears, Christmas stars, spider legs, and other recognisable forms. Bijuland ships from Plovdiv, Bulgaria and supplies craft studios, schools, flower makers, and craft supply resellers across Bulgaria and Europe.
